stop everything and listen to karen dalton

old mp3
Although I've read Dylan's "Chronicles, Volume 1" and Karen Dalton is mentioned in it I'd never encountered her until very recently (meaning yesterday!). All I can say is that, apart from my daily Grizzly Bear/Department of Eagles listening, I've been listening to her debut album "It's So hard To You Who's Gonna Love You The Best" almost non-stop and it's, frankly, astonishing.

Dylan described her having "a voice like Billie Holiday and played guitar like Jimmy Reed".

It's one of those times, like the first time you 'get' Leonard Cohen or Joy Division or Nick Drake, where you think why didn't I know this earlier? Would my life have been more complete with this in it?

So here's the title track and (I never do this) a link to the full album. It's brilliant. Now I must be off as I've just got her second record "In My Own Time". I can't wait.

Pictures. And a poem by Bukowski.

Radio

strange eyes in my head
I'm the coward and the fool and the clown
and I listen to a man telling me that I can get a
restaurant guide and an expanding cultural events calendar

I'm just not here today
I don't want restaurants and expanding cultural events
I want an old shack in the hills
rent free
with enough to eat and drink until I die

Strange eyes in my head
strange ways

no chance

The first time I saw this vid it got me. I believe the Police are real.

Moray McLaren - We Got Time

All in camera, the only editing used are the cuts. Impressive, if you ain't seen it before.

holler, wild rose!

new video

Call it busy or call it lazy but whatever you call it - it's a new video.

Now, I would argue that this post does not come from a place of bias but I will acknowledge a soft spot for New Jersey's Holler, Wild Rose! (the punctuation can be a deal-breaker for some).

Whilst their debut album never really did capture how good a live band they are (you should still get it though - it's worth it for 'Captive Train' alone!) this video goes some way to indicating what, for me, they're all about.

This is the song that they take their name from and is their usual show-closer.

You still have to go to their show to feel the full My Bloody Valentine-esque sonic assault in all its glorious loudness though.

maria bamford

new video

I think that, based on her three CD releases so far, Maria Bamford is one of my favourite comedians working the circuit today. She's quite strange, uses an array of voices and her jokes can be really rather theatrical.

The first video is to get a feel for what she does and the second video is from her new CD 'Unwanted Thoughts Syndrome' and is as good a satire of hack comedians (of any sex) as you'll see. Brilliant.

it's always sunny in philadelphia

old video

I'm not a massive fan of TV but there are a few worthwhile shows out there. This is one of them. The gang behind it may never top seasons 1 and 2 but the show has gone from a cult following to a mainstream audience on American TV without selling its soul.

It is without a doubt the riskiest comedy show on American TV which, whilst not saying much, does win it some points. Fans of Peep Show and the like will appreciate this: a classless and frank discussion of the mechanics of male homosexuality.
